Yesterday was a horrible day, weather wise and this posed me with a dilemma on what to do. I looked through my diary and saw that there was a vintage fair not too far away.
I browsed through my wardrobe and decided to wear my handmade flamingo circle skirt. This skirt and many others that I own are made from a lovely local lady who sells them from her shop 'What Shall I Wear' in Cleethorpes. What Shall I Wear All the skirts have an elasticated waist with a black waistband and on 5foot nothing me, fall at mid calf length. You can get a full net underskirt underneath if required and they wash amazingly. I paired it with a black cold shoulder top and a flamingo necklace.
The vintage fair was 'Lou Lou's Vintage Fair'. I have attended many of their fairs in Hull and this one in Scunthorpe. LouLou Vintage Fair
The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe is a large venue. It had advertisements on the outside and the Jason Donovan one caught my eye.

It was from his '10 Good Reasons' album in 1989. (The poster was to advertise Jason Donovan's tour this year, not a poster left up from 1989!! Just to clear that up!!)
I had this album, as did most other teenage girls, making it the best selling album of the year. I remember hearing a rumour that Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue were going to do a duet and my parents went into town to WHSmiths and asked if they could pre-order it but was told they knew nothing about it. The duet was 'Especially For You' and was released on 28th November 1988. I had the Jason and Kylie albums on tape but singles I had on vinyl, such as the wedding song from the soap 'Neighbours' that Kylie and Jason were in, playing Scott and Charlene. That was 'Suddenly' by Angry Anderson.
My favourite one on the 'Ten Good Reasons' album was 'Sealed with a Kiss'. It was difficult to play back tapes when you just wanted one song. You would have to reset the counter to zero and then once the song had played try and rewind to the exact number. It was a skill!!
Back to Saturday, Pirate Mick and I drove to Scunthorpe, parked at 'Sainsbury's' supermarket and walked across the road to the Baths Hall. It was £2.00 entrance fee each.
The stalls were in the large main auditorium. There was some live music from a trio of ladies, very much in the style of the Andrew sisters and the Puppini sisters. You could do with them doing some medleys and have music filling in as soon as they finish or one of them, or somebody else, filling in with some anecdotes or monologues or even just a compere as it leaves a very uncomfortable silence whilst they change music and prepare for the next song. They had very pleasant voices and I enjoyed their choice of songs, especially the upbeat ones.

We enjoyed looking around the stalls. A couple of things caught my eye but nothing that fitted right. I am looking for some 1960's bright mini dresses.
I was discussing this with Pirate Mick that I struggle to find vintage things to wear. I feel I am too old to get away with wearing a lot of the things without looking frumpy and weird. When you are young you can get away with dressing kooky and individual. I hate wearing what everybody else does and following the crowd but a lot of true vintage items are just too small for me. Pirate Mick pointed out that a lot of women at the age I am would be a wearing pinafores and aprons and a lot more frumpy than the look I am going for. What do you think? If I am feeling confident then I can pull it off and wear anything with my head held high but sometimes a sneering look or snide comment can ruin your day.

Before we left we had a lovely cup of coffee in a china cup and I had a slice of caramac cake and Pirate Mick had a cream tea scone. Very civilised and so many delicious cakes to choose from.

I understand. I would love to experiment more in clothes and vintage but worry about looking stupid.
ReplyDeleteI think it is in the confidence. If you are feeling confident, hold your head high and do not worry what others think. This is what I am trying to tell myself. Let me know how you get on xx
